  1. The one at the airport, so you can get out of there as quickly as possible.

  2. We stayed at Hotel La Fenice; nice hotel, very reasonable, and quite close to everything. Just a five minute walk to the Trevi Fountain.

And with a subway; which is safe and easy, its like $3 for an all day pass that takes you EVERYWHere. HOtels are by the subway stops.

  3. Hotel prices in Rome can vary quite a bit depending on exactly when you want to be there. It's difficult to answer this without knowing more information - do you mean $300 per night or $300 for some unspecified number of days (which is not possible to answer).

The site I use here in Italy is Venere.com: http://en.venere.com/hotels_rome/. It has listings for nearly 600 hotels in Rome. If you use the "Find hotels on map" feature, you can narrow down your search to a specific district in the city. Then you can sort by price, rating, etc to see the choices. The reviews by past guests are useful for getting a feel for what the hotel is like.

For the major tourist attractions, you want to look at the Colosseo, Pantheon, Trevi, Navona, Piazza di Spagna, or Trastavere areas. Repubblica, near Roma Termini station is a little further out, but well connected by Metro and bus, and within walking distance of many of the sights. It will generally be cheaper there.

Assuming you mean $300 per night, here are some that I have used and like:

Hotel Regno: http://en.venere.com/hotels_rome/fontana... - right now, this is slightly above your budget, but it is sometimes below. Located between Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon.

Hotel Accademia: http://en.venere.com/hotels_rome/fontana... - immediately around the corner from Trevi Fountain about $220 per night right now.

Hotel Cesari - at the Pantheon. http://en.venere.com/hotels_rome/pantheo...

Hotel Romano - right across from the Forum. A two star under $200 per night:
