  1. Vatican City, Venice, San Marino and Rome are the key places to visit in Italy. If you got extra days in vacation, try visting Malta which is very nearby Italy in the Meditteranean Sea which is definitely a very good place for vacation.

  2. roma,siena,firenze,venezia.....No south

  3. Given the amount of time you have here a mix of the large cities and smaller towns would be ideal, but this isn't really practical because the Italian vacation period is in August and many of us won't be here. The hotels and all but one or two restaurants will be closed for two weeks in the town where I live. You will be better off primarily sticking to the major tourist routes. Definitely see Venice, Florence and Rome. Obviously, you'll want to see the major sites in those cities  while you're there, but you'll have time for day trips as well.

Near Venice, Padova, Treviso and Verona are all worth visiting and are easy to reach by train. You might want to spend a day or two around Garda Lake near Verona - Sirmioni and Malcesine are both particularly nice. From Florence, you can take the train to Pisa (but see the tower and spend most of the day in Lucca), Siena, and/or San Gimignano for day trips. Day trips from Rome might include Tivoli, Orvieto, or even Capri.

Be prepared for hot temperatures and crowds of tourists, but you should have a great time.
