Any positions like that in IL. I don't have any college but have 4 years in the Marines. Also would any of my years count towards retirement?

  1. I must echo Rango's sentiment and thank you for your service as well.  I'll go a step further and say I support our efforts in the Middle-East.

Make phone calls, knock on doors, whatever you must do.  Positions are usually advertised.  With a military background, Railroad Police may be interested in hearing from you.  Being a US MARINE is a plus on any job application, in my book.

Though railroaders pay into Railroad Retirement, a federal program, we are not civil servants, so military time wouldn't count, unless in the circumstances Rango has outlined.

The good news is, most seniority rosters on most railroads are in a period of "turn-over" right now, as dinosaurs like Rango, Andy and the rest of us are close to or already are enjoying the fruits of our labors (...speaking of which, NO LAYIN' OFF!  I want them checks to keep a commin'...).

Don't limit your search to CSX, either.  Odds are, you will wind up having to move for railroad employment anyway.

    Good Luck!

  2. First off, thank you for your military service to our country.

The only way military times goes towards railroad retirement is if you were working for the railroad before you went in,  as far as I know.

Most railroad jobs pay well and have good benefits, there is always room for advancement, depending on the department, they always need supervisors.

I can say that jobs in the operating department (train service) keep you reasonably busy, mostly nights and weekends.

There is always a chance for advancement in managment, most railroads take their trainmasters and road foremen from the ranks of the operating department.

    Good Luck.
