Even though I have dyslexia, I worked hard and earned my bachelor's degree three years ago. However, I still have trouble with short-term memory. If a co-worker speaks rapidly, only giving information verbally, I forget a lot of it. I know I lost my job because of it. Believe it or not, my job was as a writer--both in public relations and marketing. Now, I want to give it up! Help me find a more fitting job!!!! PLEASE!!!

  1. You seem to fit well into the workforce no matter what the challenge is. Even though you have the disability, you seem to work quite well with it and rise above it. What job to do is entirely up to you. Pick something and run with it, and do NOT let the disability hold you back.

  2. You could sue the **** out of them because that's a learning disability

  3. You have a disability-you have a right to job accomodations for it-such as making sure things are written down-

unfortuantely-you need a lot of money for a lawyer to enforce the law as the US government can't be bothered to do its job (EEOC ignores disability discrimination)

  4. First of all, kudos for your efforts !

i think as you have a trouble with short term memory, and recollecting information when told fast, you should be comfortable in a job where you have to deal with clearly defined matter like printed information, audio-visual tapes etc., like editing, making slides and presentations.

Computer courses like power-point, are related with making slides for presentations and presenting them in a colorful , attractive manner using tables ,etc. You can consult a school for these kind of courses. You don't even have to memorize much in them as they are practical and easy to use.

Also you can try in advertising , to edit data and put it in an attractive manner.

If you are interested you can go for fashion designing , interior decorations, cooking etc.

Basically practical jobs or jobs with definite data given in a written form .

All the best to you ! Hope this helps !

  5. well my boyfriend is dyslexic and he is an absolutly amazing actor and he got a job an has an agent and is now in many movies, u could try commercial acting, see how it works

  6. Speech writer.

  7. Sepending how badly dislexic you are. Most dislexic people are very creative. My best friend who was point 7 became a director,k which he is fabulous at. Or somthing in mechanics etc. But if yo have trouble with short term memory maybe that's not a great idea being trusted with a car.

  8. successful dyslexics I know are hairdressers, plumbers, DJ's

However, as a writer, you are a communicator, and lots of people like communication with less text.  I taught for 33 years and my teaching of many was improved hugely when I started using mind mapping.  The software was originally imported by the Dyslexia association, but I found at all levels, from SEN to gifted and talented, students liked this way of communicating their ideas AND raised achievement significantly.  Perhaps you can just change your career path a little so you still gaion from your experience?  many of the educational websites like communications that are more visual.  Or you could learn about mind mapping and perhaps help other dyslexics at any level of education to use it effectively?  After all, your dyslexia then becomes a knowledge you are using in your career!  I don't know where you are based or how to contact anyone directly using this website, but I'd be happy to help you use the software I favour which is www.inspiration.com and look for a download of Inspiration mind-mapping tool.  There are tutorials within the software to help you learn it.
