Question:

What's the best kayak for me?

I am really interested in purchasing a kayak (used and under $300). I would like to use it in the river but would also like to take out to the ocean as well. I'm not sure if this is possible with just one kayak or if I am looking at multiple purchases here. I also enjoy snorkeling and want to get into scuba diving as well so this would be another thing I would like to use an ocean kayak for. Any suggestions? Things to avoid or look for?

  1. The Prijon Hurricane is a great boat. Its a great river runner, and is fun on flat water, but can be used in ocean surf too. Check around to see if you have a whitewater store in your area, they often have gear swaps. In my area we are fortunate enough to have this great company, Four Corners Riversports www.riversports.com. Check there site, its full of good information in general.

  2. $500 would be better but you could try ebay

  3. If your paddling in the ocean then you need a sea kayak. the advantage of the sea kayak is that the cockpit can take on water without the boat sinking.

if your only going to be paddling handy flat water then the sea kayak will do you all around. i'd never advise you paddle whitewater without joinning a club first

  4. If by "use it in the river" you mean flat water river sections, you can use a river boat (also sometimes called a "rec boat" or "recreation boat") on the ocean, though the two types of boats are designed differently so you won't have as "easy" a time of it paddling a river boat on the ocean.  It will still work though.

If by "use it in the river" you mean whitewater, then you'll be better off making a second purchase later for ocean kayaking.  Paddling a whitewater boat in the ocean is only fun if you're surfing.  Otherwise it's just too much work because white water boats are designed for maneuvering, not paddling for long distances.

Snorkeling from a kayak is reasonably simple to do and any rec boat or sea kayak will suit you well for that, but trying to haul SCUBA equipment is a bit more work and most people I've heard who try it say it's really not worth the effort.

Look at your local paddling clubs for boats.  Finding a whitewater boat in your price range won't be a problem at all as people are buying new boats this time of year getting ready for the spring season.  If you're looking for a rec boat or an ocean boat, you might find one in your price range, but you're more likely to have luck if you can spend closer to $500-$700 because those boats retain their value longer than whitewater boats do, and generally cost a little more new.  You can get some decent plastic boats new for around $700 though, so you may be able to find something at a really good deal.

Also consider looking at rental boats that are on sale at the end of the season for good deals (might be too late now, but you may still get lucky.)

Another thing to remember, you have to consider the cost of a PFD, helmet (highly recommended for whitewater) paddle, and other gear as part of your budget too.  If $300 is your total budget, I'd say save up a bit more so you can get at least a boat and the minimum other necessary gear.

  5. i bought a brand new pelican kayak from sports authority for 250 dollars. it is a great kayak.
