I live in an area with lots of very steep hills. Paved, but lots of potholes. I am looking for a < $500 bike that would be suited cycling in my area.

  1. Bad pavement rules out road bikes. Most all hybrids will have the gears needed for your riding as would MTBs. Hybrid types come in all sorts of designs from almost MTBs to almost road bikes to cruser like. There are many choices. Basically, you need a wide gear selection with wider tires. Many hybrids and MTBs fit this need.

  2. hey, same with me. what i use and m comfortable with is the bike with large dia wheel and a comfortable seat(its really awful cycling the less spongy seat)coz u need to drag it through the ups n downs of those hills ,n with the conditions u hav mentioned ,u really need to hav a good spongy thick seat and of course , well maintained bike. And beliv me u will really enjoy the ride to the top!

  3. An ELECTRIC one!!!!☼

  4. I don't think you would have to rule out a road bike.... I have trained and raced on alot of bad pavement. A roadbike will be nice for steep hills (they are lighter and more efficient). I would look for some heavy duty training tires with maybe some tire liners to stay away from getting flats. Talk to the local bike shop.... they will have better knowlegde of your roads and will be able to give better advice. They can also give you the brands that will have models under $500.

    Good Luck!
