I know nothing about jewelry.. except that my fiance and I cannot afford gold wedding bands. I am not picky as to what type of metal, only that I don't want it to get scratched up. I would like it to be very durable. What's the best (affordable) metal for a durable wedding band?

  1. First, congratulations!

All of the answers above offer good low cost alternatives.

14K gold wedding bands are about $270 each as of today.

Tungsten carbide has the advantage in that they are VERY hard so they don't scratch. They are "silvery" and costs about $100 each. Titanium wedding bands are very light and cost about $80 each, but they are less bright. Stainless steel band goes for about $60. All are good choices.

Let me state why the tradition. People chose gold wedding bands because it represents your partnership in life. (1) Gold does not tarnish with time, like your love and devotion for each other, in sickness and in health. (2) The ring is a perfect circle -- perfect like the love and harmony and family you two will strife to achieve, even though most of ours will be flawed -- like the minor scratches and bumps.

So all will do. Just honor each other and stay true. Many do not even have a wedding band but believe on the tradition. Good luck.

  2. Definitely best to go for Titanium.  i got a titanium ring a couple of years ago for my wedding and it's really light and not a scratch on it.  You can get some really cool designs too.  They're better value than Gold or platinum but not so cheap that it means nothing to buy one for someone.

Check out some of the websites out there that do titanium rings or ask your local jeweller

  3. Titanium is one of the most durable metals that might be used for rings.  I don't know about the expense of it.

  4. get a tungston ring

  5. Stainless steel would be good, too, and cheaper than tungsten, titanium, or tungsten carbide. But I have no idea if anyone makes them commercially.

How times have changed! When my wife and I got engaged in 1959, the 1/3 carat engagement ring cost $200, the man's wedding ring $20 and the woman's ring $10. And that was at Peacock's, the fanciest jewelry store in Chicago.

  6. Titanium- last forever  and is hypoallerginic too.
