Question:

What's the best location for a beginner to surf in Oahu?

I'm in the Army, and I'm currently deployed to Iraq. Soon I will redeploy to Hawaii and I wanted to see if anyone knows the best place in Oahu (Preferably North Shore since that's where I'm going to live) to learn how to surf. I'm not worried about actual instructions, I'm mainly worried about good sized waves for a beginner to work with. I've never surfed before. Thanks for any info.

  1. Many hotels have the surf schools there.  Keep to those beaches Howley.

  2. the deepest part and sand bars

  3. http://www.yourmilitaryinhawaii.com/pdf/...

The above link is very informative in general.

Generally the North Shore (Sunset Beach, Bonzai Pipeline, and Haleiwa) are for advanced surfers but there are spots for beginners. The bases list Hale Koa, Pyramid Rock, Fort Hase, and North Beach as surf spots and Hans Hedemann as the preferred surf instructor.

  4. off the wall, back door, rockys point, log cabins, wiamea bay

  5. get a tow in at Jaws...

  6. Pipeline ,Waimeia or JAWS (thats where i took my three year old son to learn).

  7. Ok, if you really want to learn to surf start with smaller waves. There are a few beaches on the north shore that don't get to huge, but your best bet though would probably be to go toward town. ( Honolulu / Waikiki area ) Try learning to surf at Ala moana, Kings, Queens, or even out at Diamond Head.

  8. You definitely need to take lessons. That is the best way for you to learn.
