  1. The best Type 1 deck right now would probably be Tendrils.

Play a bunch of Moxes and Black lotus, then Ancestral Recall and Timetwister to find the Tendrils of Agony, get 10 spells played on your turn, then play the Tendrils to deal 20 damage to your opponent and you gain 20 life.  Game over turn 1.

The best deck in Standard right now, would probably be Blue/Black Faeries.  Bitterblossom, Oona, and a whole bunch of Faeries swarm for the win.

  2. Well, with the introducction of Shadowmoor Grindstone/Servant decks seem to be doing pretty well.

The basic idea is to play Painter's servant (naming any color) and then play and activate grindstone. This way you will mill your opponent out of his/her library inmediatly.

In Standard the best deck right now is fairies. Over 60% of the field is fairies, so you must be prepared for it.

  3. With the recent set of restrictions in T1 (vintage), the previously good decks all got nerfed, because they are running a lot of the restricted cards. The Gush-Fastbond engine is now not viable for tournament play, brainstorm is gone, and so, the tendrils deck is dropping place fast.

If money is no object, then the tendrils deck may be the right choice. However, unless you want to sell all your possessions and remortgage your house, I don’t think you’ll want to get into vintage in that way.

I like Dredge. This deck is very cheap to build, as it doesn’t use the power nine, and the most expensive card in the deck is the Bazaar of Baghdad, which is way less than a black lotus. It is just as powerful, and it can win consistently on turn two. People say that it’s too slow, but it is not, and it’s great fun to watch a deck with precisely NO MANA SOURCES win.

I play the deck, and I love it. You’ll find that it wins a number of games, and it won’t empty your wallet while doing it. You’ve got to love the look on your opponent’s face when you Dread Return a 40+/40+ Sutured Ghoul with haste and smash face with it.

Have fun playing vintage. It’s a great format, and it’s a lot of fun. Crazy stories are told about this format, and crazy games are played, showing great design sense from Wizards.

The best deck in standard right now is undoubtedly faeries. However, this has caught on and everyone now has sideboard cards against faeries. Faeries are great, playing perhaps the most broken card in standard at the moment: the $30+ Bitterblossom. With a lot of early pressure, counterspells, Cryptic Command, and the Mistbind Clique, which is like a time walk on a stick, faeries swarm you with lots of little creatures bent on mischief and beating the h**l out of you.

I don’t play faeries. I play Rock. I like the rock because it is stable – it has at least a 50% win percentage against every deck out there. Whenever you want stability, you look to Black/Green Rock. It’s a very expensive deck to make, featuring the broken Bitterblossom, the ever-expensive Tarmogoyf, the amazing Thoughtseize, Garruk the feared planeswalker, and Doran himself. $600 is a lot to pay for stability, but I like it a lot, and I think that it is the best deck in standard, but on this front, I am more than just a bit biased.

Play what your heart tells you to play. If you want to play faeries, play faeries. If you want to play rock, play rock. If you want to play aggro or burn, play aggro or burn. Playing a deck that you enjoy is always better than simply playing the best deck in the format, one that you might not enjoy to play so much. Play what you want to play – you’ll soon be convinced that whatever deck you pilot is the best deck in the meta right now.
