I am looking to get a reel mower for our small yard. We have two trees in which branches fall but it's easy to pick up the debris and our grass grows very straight. Our front yard is almost completely shaded by 3 trees and it very patchy. I want a reel mower for the in between mowings and I will use the gas for the big jobs if necessary. I don't want to spend too much money but I also don't want a piece of junk that I'll use once and then hang up in the garage and never use again or sell. People say the Scotts is cheaply made but those have the most reviews...

  1. Reel mowers...boy does that bring back memories.  We had to use those when we were growing up.  Great excercise..lol

If I were going to buy one today, I would ask a person who knows how to sharpen them.  If I remember right, it was hard, even when they were popular, to find a man who knew how to sharpen them properly.  He might be able to give you some good advice.

Here are "some" ideas to get familiar with them in this web site:

And here is the sharpening process.  You "can" do it yourself but it looks like more work than the mowing.

And here is a web site for an outfit that does the sharpening

Maybe you could find one similar close to where you live or email these guys

Good luck and thanks for an interesting question...a star 4 u

  3. they aren't that different

  4. We just bought one at Lowe's and it works great.  When shopping they were all basically the same except for the length of the blades.
