What's the best method to teach yourself a new language?

My high school only offers one language course - Spanish. I am therefore taking it into my own hands to teach myself German. I don't want to download anything, though a list of what I'll need would be most helpful. I just need some advice on how to start this out. c:

immersion is the best way, though you can always use Living Language books (They're amazing) and Pimsleur for speaking and pronunciation. also watch German Tv OR listen to german songs.

German for Dummies. Get it from the library. It worked for me. Don't be offended by the Dummies part though. If you are smart enough to try learning a new language, then you are not a dummy.
