Question:

What's the best option for an uninsured couple?

I'm forty-nine, no real health problems. My wife is forty-three, has several chronic conditions, none progressive or life-threatening.

We make a decent living, and can afford to pay for REAL insurance, not the has-more-holes-than-Swiss-cheese type.

What should we do? Which companies are the best at dealing with people like us?

  1. ehealthinsurance.com is a great place to start. It'll give you rates and comparisons to various companies in your area. Plus to get a quote is easy, just give age, DOB and whether or not you smoke, then you get your quotes... Of course quotes are not always exact, you'll have to answer many questions when applying, that will determine your premiums...

good luck.... oh and even if you don't want to buy through ehealthinsurance, it's at least good to look at to give you an idea of your health insurance quotes.

  2. Contact an insurance broker to help you out because it depends on where you live.  If you lived where I am it'd only cost you about $600/month for an HSA plan including the deposit to fully fund the HSA to bring it to a quasi-zero deductible plan ($300 for the insurance and $300 for the plan).  And, that includes the pre-existing condtions being covered....and a FAR CRY from $1,000/month (although there are expensive states let's not assume you live in one).

ehealth is fine to get quotes, but don't support a large company where you'd be dealing with customer service reps.  You can deal with an insurance professional who will be a better resource down the road.

I buy from Amazon because they save me money, but the insurance industry is regulated so the little, boutique firms actually have the advantage .....and that's expertise and service.

http://www.InsurancePickle.com   you can try my site to see if it'll give you quotes (it works in many states and asks no personal information other than date of birth and is easy to follow than aforementioned company's).

  3. Likely, no one is going to give your wife any coverage for pre-existing conditions - and they might flat out refuse to cover her at all.

Since you've got a hard to insure person, you should be using a local agent, who will be able to give you more specific information, and you'll be able to tell them about the conditions.

Expect to pay about $1,000 a month, or more, for a decent, low/no deductible hmo style plan.
