What's the best petrol additive to reduce petrol consumption?

Am I dreaming, or are there ways to increase your fuel economy for a petrol engine? (I know you can 'improve' diesel (old engines at least) with a drop or two of chip fat) - Please no bloody environmentalists who tell me to take the bus or to cycle- I do that wherever possible but I also live in a rural area where you can't go out at night UNLESS you drive

  1. You are dreaming !!

  2. That greased lighting PTFE additive gets a good write up, and they sell an fuel treatment aswell

I used them on my last car......  still never saw a bowl full of cash saving as they said...

Mind you,   never had any major engine repairs

Slow down,  and keep to speed limits

  3. why dont you consider taking the bus or maybe even cycling.hope this helps you

  4. The only way to reduce fuel consumption is the way you drive nothing else.

  5. A light foot!

    There is also water injection.

Ethanol in with the fuel (like the chip fat for diesel)

getting the car serviced, this will help the fuel consumption, keep the tyres up to pressure.

Close windows at speed, remove the roof rack.

Empty the boot of things you don't need to carry, use a space saver (weight saver) tyre - or tyre weld.

  6. You can add Octane boosters, they let the computer add more timing by preventing knocking or just buy the higher grade...

  7. Get your car serviced and tuned up.Make sure the tyre pressures are correct and the tracking is spot on.Dejunk it.Drive gently and dont accelerate and brake hard.Thats about all you can do.I dont think octane boosters work.I do know that a light right foot does.

  8. Like Acka says, a light foot, high tyre pressures, no junk in the car.

I would also add correct front wheel alignment, and a good pair of eyes looking well ahead so you don't have to brake so much.

There is no "magic sauce" you can add to the petrol, that only works on burgers!

Shell V-Power can give a few mpg more, but it costs more and often that wipes out the improvement

  9. Looks like you are not going to have much of a night life, sorry about that.

  10. Type in "hypermiling" into either Google or YouTube.

Very good advise on improving your driving habits to increase fuel mileage.  I incorporate many of the techniques into my daily riding and have seen my gas mileage improve.

One note, I do not condone tailgating, especially on a motorcycle.

Sadly there is not magic cure to this whole fuel cost situation.  Up till 2004, 70% of Ford's sales volume was trucks and SUVs.  So many people fell prey to clever marketing by the big auto makers and made the wrong decision when they bought a vehicle.

I will add this point.  The US auto makers all but gave up on the small car market and ceded it to the Japanese and Korean car companies.  I for one do not fit in about 90% of the cars offered.  I am 6'1" tall.  But most cars are built for drivers 5'8" tall.  Or women.  And women on average stand 5'4" in height.  People like me are all but forced to buy a van, truck or SUV, is we chose to buy domestic, for seating comfort.

And now once again, Ford is caught with a glut of gas guzzling trucks and SUVs nobody wants.  They never learn.  I hope they go out of business.

  11. With extremely high gas prices straining consumers pockets in recent months, it is only natural for people to wonder where all the money they pay at the pump goes..Source:
