What's the best process for moving to Australia?

I'm an American and I'm interested in moving abroad. I know it can be kind of hard to get a work visa in Australia depending on the economy at the time, but I suppose my real questions is, do I have any chance of finding a job while I'm still in the states and then moving or is my only chance to move there and then find a job?

  1. Mate, unless the particular job requires really rare skills, most Australian employers are reluctant to consider interSTATE (i.e. within Australia) candidates, let alone ones from overseas. Of course, it all depends on the profession you are in.

  2. You can migrate to Australia if you are under 45 and have a skill on the list Australia is seeking. See www.immi.gov.au for the list and all the info.

It is much easier to find a job once you are here, but you can look at www.seek.com to get some ideas of the jobs available. Depending on which skill you have, you may be able to get a job from the States once your permanent residency visa is approved.

  3. it isnt easy to immigrate to australia, you must be a skilled worker in an occupation australia needs and you have to pass a points test

  4. Unfortunately mate, the "best" process is the most difficult.  It's playing the immigration game; along with 1,000s of other applicants every year.  Americans have to queue up (along with everyone else); there's no special treatment.

However, you may want to consider multinational companies.  I don't know what your skill sets are, so this is a blind stab in the dark.  But say (for instance) you have a job with NCR or Ford, you may then have the opportunity to take an "internal" transfer to an "offshore position" in Australia.  Similarly, getting a job with a multinational Australian company (such as BHP) may help you get a position within the company, but on this side of the planet.

    Good Luck.

Though perseverancee is probably your only option; unless you're a doctor or paramedic (or some other skill set we are desperate for).  In which case you'd pretty much be handed an airline ticket.  Hope you like Qantas!  LOL
