i've had a set of taylormade 200 series for about 3 years (since i began playing)... i basically bought those since they were affordable at the time. since i have nothing to compare them to, i thought they were decent irons. now, i want to invest my mula in better irons. what would you reccomend for a player that shoots in the high 80's?

  1. Check out the new Golf Magazine Club Test '08 issue.  Look at the Game Improvement Irons.  There is also a list of game improvement drivers as well as hybrids, fairway woods, wedges, and putters.   I always look forward to this annual issue.

  2. Take some oversize irons of a few brands to the range. I like Ping, Tommy Armour, and Titleist

  3. Callaway X20's superb set of irons

  4. Cobras

  5. WITH THAT SCORE DONT PLAY AT ALL

  6. Something forgiving.

Callaway makes good "game improvement" irons, as does Ping (the advantage with Ping is you can get properly fit).  Titleist makes great clubs but aren't really for high-handicappers.

  7. CALLAWAY!!!!!!!!!

  8. Go to a driving range that has a selection of "demo" irons.  Try the same iron (7, 5, etc.) from different makers.  Don't choose on the basis of distance alone...go for accuracy and consistency.  The important part, in my opinion, is having the irons properly fitted to your swing (with proper lie angle, shaft, etc.).  I found that a set of fitted irons helped my game significantly more than upgrading to a brand-name set had done a few years earlier.  You do need a consistent swing for this to work for you.  At first I just ordered 4-8 then added the 3 and 9 irons after being convinced my game improved!

  9. Mizuno MX-25's, reg. flex. Cobra irons are also making a fantastic comeback. I'm glad to see it. The new Big Bertha's look user friendly also.
