  1. it does depend on the track u r running on.some tracks have maximum lengths u r allowd to use (usually 6mm or 9mm)

6mm are the best as you can use them on any track, and they give you eought grip, i myself run 200m 300m and 400m and those are what my coach told me to get so.... 6mm!

  2. This is a really good question for your coach...

For High School, if your program does not provide spikes, the rules for spike type, number, and length will vary by state.

For NCAA, the venue (site of the meet) generally dictates spike rules (plus, your program should be supplying spikes).

In general though, here are recommendations for different conditions in the 100/200/400m

Indoor Track: 3/16" - 1/4" Steel or Aluminum Needles

The reason that Needles are usually better indoors is that many indoor tracks are rolled surfaces (like Mondo Super X) that must be penetrated by the sharp needle for best traction.

Outdoor Track: 3/16" -1/4" Steel or Aluminum Pyramids

The reason here is that many outdoor tracks are sprayed, bumpy surfaces that you need to compress for best traction.
