  1. If you're asking for stock tips here, you probably shouldn't be buying stocks at all!

Individual stocks, (especially tech startups!) are very risky, and should only be bought as part of a very diverse portfolio. Even if you still want to buy individual stocks, thinking that something will grow is a very bad way to pick them. Everyone on Wall Street knows that greentech companies have the potential to grow, and they already factor this in to the price of the stock. Pricing a stock requires modelling a company's financials (sales and costs), then factoring in risk and your desired rate of return. You shouldn't buy stocks unless you have a really good reason to believe that Wall Street's price is too low. This requires either figuring out your own price using information that isn't available to institutional investors, or conducting a more in-depth analysis of a company that isn't followed closely.

Casual investors, and serious ones who don't have time to do financial modelling, should buy no-load mutual funds or index funds. With the latter, you'll get returns similar to the average Wall Street traders, and you aren't putting your money in such a risky situation. Don't try to "beat the street" - there are very few people in the world who can do this, and if you're here, you're not one of them (myself included).

  2. Personally I own stock in ZAP, which makes electric vehicles.   They've got two which are scheduled to come out in 2009 which I think will be the beginning of a move towards electric vehicles.  Check them out:

ZAP already makes some smaller short range electric vehicles and other electric products (batteries, etc.), so it's a pretty reliable company, and the stock is only at $1 right now.

In terms of hybrids, there are a lot of companies to choose from.  All of the German auto companies (Volkswagon, BMW, etc.) are starting to move toward diesel-electric hybrids, which will get great mileage.  Chevy is expected to come out with the Volt (plug-in hybrid) in late 2010, which will run purely on electric power for 40 miles and then act as a gas/electric hybrid after that.  Toyota is working on a plug-in version of the Prius, as well.  Those are the leaders in hybrid development right now.
