  1. Hey AmberLynn:

Try out a longboard, like around 9ft,4" or so. Bigger boards are more forgiving, and you'll be able to surf smaller waves with a bigger board. If you're taking lessons, they'll probably put you on a soft top or other board that's both really long and wide.

For paddling comfort, when you buy a board, compare its width to your shoulder width. If its too wide, it will be awkward to paddle. goodluck!

  2. yeah if your a beginner just go for a Mal first, something with size and weight, and just go slow. practice standing up on the shore breaks etc and learn your balance and start reading what the wave is doing.  The bigger the board the more forgiving it is generally and it allows you a chance to stand up on even the smallest waves and play around.         Then in a while you can get yourself a 6 '8 0r 6'9 thruster and go rip.     Enjoy!!!!!

  3. if your a guy like me who cant afford to buy a board every few months i eould advise you buy a 7 foot 3 board!! not only is it easy to start on when you turn intermediate you wont have to go buying a new board!! i rode my first board on my 7;3 and won my last comp with my 7;3...........and im 6 foot 2 by the way so it would be perfect for you!!

    happy ridin!!
