  1. The Kia Sportage advertises 23 city/28 highway mpg.  That's the highest mpg numbers I'm aware of for an SUV.

Honda's CR-V advertises 20 city/27 highway mpg, those are 2008 numbers, which are based on the new testing procedures and likely to be waht you actually experience.

Toyota RAV4's are listed as 21/27 mpg, which makes them competitive with the above models.

Slightly below these is the Hyundai Santa Fe, at 20/25.

  2. try Ford Edge.  So far it has longer gas mileage than any other SUV in its class

  3. I drive a Jeep grand cherokee, 4x4, 2004 and I get 19mpg in town, 22 mpg on highway. I love it.

  4. That is not a clear question.

Efficiency should be considered also. How many people do you need to haul and how often?

The above econo boxes MIGHT handle four adults for short trips. Three seat vans perhaps 6-8, larger suv's easly and comfortably 8 and larger 9 then the 15 passenger vans.

Now you have to look at what the fuel per mile per passenger calculation is.

Good Luck.......Buy American..it is all we have!
