  1. The most easterly of the Caribbean islands, Barbados is a rare coral-capped Madonna in a neighborhood of volcanic cousins. Historically, the breadth of its swell window on the Atlantic has been surpassed only by the breadth of its exposure to the people of the world. Once a British colony, the Bajan Island is a blend of Africans, Europeans, Indians, Arabs, and Jews, and is one of the most dynamic cultures in the Caribbean. Among surfers the island is renowned for the consistency of its surf in a wildly inconsistent ocean. Covering an area of 166 square miles, BIM (as it is known to it's inhabitants) has 60 miles of coastline and a population of about 300,000. Tourists pick up the slack here, sightseeing the prehistoric countryside, makeshift chattel houses, and the countless miles of sugarcane fields.

    The Seasons

    Summer

The summers in Barbados can sometimes be blessed with South Atlantic swells that light up places like Brandon's seemingly out of the blue. It's also a time when things can get down right hot, being so close to the equator. But the trades are ever-present, and this is also the time of year when even a tropical wave moving across the convergence zone can stir up enough action for clean waves on the east coast.

    Fall

As summer rolls into autumn in Barbados things generally start to come together nicely. Tropical storms and hurricanes are often in the window, and winds can be light, variable, and very favorable. Cold fronts usher in the change of season, and clean north swells start marching down from the mid Atlantic buffeted by a constant trade wind. Hold on to your hat at Soup Bowls this time of year as it can often be pumping.

    Winter

This is the time to be in Barbados. If you live in the northern latitudes, BIM is your antithesis in many ways. All the cold weather your mates are enduring at home is just sending swell after swell down to this Caribbean outpost. Living is slow, beer is cold, nightlife is hopping if you drive down south, and there's pretty much always an overhead wave at Soup Bowls.

    Spring

This is a time of year when anything can happen. Surf season can end early with no swell generating fronts and incessant trade winds, or you can find yourself scoring overhead swells with offshores straight on through Easter. Overall, Barbados is usually a good bet right through the end of March, and the months of May and June can sometimes be a treat.

  2. wrong, it's in the winter... January is rumored to be pumping.

  3. December

    No huricanes

    not too hot

    not cold

    doesn't rain that much

  4. If you plan on going to Barbados in June/July bring your laptop, 'cause the only surfing you'll be doing is on the Internet. To truly find good, rideable surf anywhere in the Carribean you'll need to make your travel plans for September-November. The east coast hurricane season is when places like "Soupbowls" will be fun. Good luck.
