  1. Brand doesn't matter so much as quality. I've owned both a Brother and a Singer and both are/were great, but the cheaper models aren't built as well as the more expensive models. This goes for almost any manufacturer.

Husqvarna is also a great brand.

Strangely, the more expensive models are also easier to use. I have no idea why it's tear-your-hair-out frustrating to sew a buttonhole with a $300 machine but as easy as pie with a $1,000 machine, especially given that new sewers who don't know how to sew a buttonhole manually are more likely to buy the $300 machine.

  2. singer

  3. singer

  4. The European brands are best.  . I have a Janome and am satisfied with it as the best of cheaper brands.  I consider that the Husqvarna and other continental brands are far superior but cannot afford one.

  5. a lot of designers actually use Brother.  I also happen to have one and I think it's great!

  6. Singer is a quality brand that has been around for decades! They also offer an excellent repair/replacement part warranty with all their machines.

I bought mine at Wal-Mart for about $80 and I love it! It's called the "Singer Prélude." If you go to a sewing specialty shop you will pay considerably more.
