I like Joe R's answer, so here's a corollary.  Beckham is told he can be Captain but first he has to get a normal hairstyle; the rest are told they can be Captain but first they have to style their hair like his.  Whoever takes THAT with the most calmness is the new Captain.

The other three actually have to do the hairstyle change.

A... hot dog eating contest. ORRRR he could simply look at who has the biggest impact on the team. I mean on one hand you could have a  captain who could down the most dogs... but on the other hand. you could have a captain who could get the WHOLE team to down the most dogs.. which would you prefer?
