What's the best way to advertise a yard/garage sale?

This is going to be my first yard sale and I don't live on a busy street or corner house... so what's the best way to advertise a yard sale?

Any advice on how to run in smoothly?

I live on a dead end.  I went and got two big pieces of foam board and just wrote  "BIG YARD SALE" with big arrows, and parked the cars at the main street with the signs wedged into the open trunks of the cars.

Believe me, when shoppers see those signs, you can hear the tires screech.  Worked like a champ.

in the newspaper, and put up signs, also call your local radio stations and see if they'll advertise you too! i'd also put of a flyer at the grocery store and any gas stations around! good luck.

to get it to run smoothly, relax, and talk to people when they get there! customers are going to haggle so accept some of them.

I would agree with using large signs.  Make them bright and make sure they can be read from a distance.  Don't let visitors get lost trying to find your sale.  I would also recommend free online advertising like craigslist.  To help your sale stand out, you could put it on a map at my website ( http://salenook.com ) for free and link your user page to your craigslist listing as well.

Try Craigslist.  Put up signs. Put an ad in the local paper.

Above answers are great.

Add balloons as well - great to get their attention. Add to signs on car and on your building.

Put up signs at local grocery and other local retailers that allow it.

To run smoothly;

HAVE CHANGE - lots of singles, dimes, nickels, quarters!

It helps to wear an apron or f***y pack to make payments easier.

Depending on the weather, an ice bucket filled with COLD SODA for $1 or $.50 is a great idea my BF came up with.
