It seems like most adults I know have had at least one root canal... is there any secret to avoiding them all together?

  1. Yes, regular xrays to make sure a cavity is filled before the infection goes deep.  I have had two root canals.  You are wise to try to avoid them, they are something less than wonderful.

  2. Besides the obvious answers (brush, floss, etc), the easiest way to avoid a root canal is to visit your dentist regularly.

Usually, a root canal is a last resort treatment when a tooth has so much decay that the root is affected, or there is an infection in the tooth. Typically, neither of these things will happen if you are going to your dentist every 6 months for an exam and a cleaning. A big part of visiting the dentist every 6 months is prevention... so you can catch cavities while they're small and get them fixed before they need a root canal.

  3. I asked my dentist that when I had mine done a few months ago.

He said to brush your teeth twice a day, floss, and use a good mouthwash.

He recommended an enamel strengthening toothpaste like pronamel or something.

Oh and if I feel any old feelings getting loose or missing to get in to the office as soon as possible to prevent further decay.

  4. Never go to a Dentist! They are the ones who do them!
