If you are an experienced gold investor, I would like your opinion on how new gold investors should get started. Also, is this a good time to invest in gold, and what do you think the prospects are over the next year?

  1. GLD is the only reasonable way for a small investor...unless you are also an numismatist.

    No.

I am neutral on gold -- having sold everything but my minimum 2% position in 2006.

  2. Gold coins are the way to go. Latest prices you can sell at are published at http://www.hattongardenmetals.com. They also sell coins at a little over spot price.

A word of warning. Watch out for fake sovereigns. There are a lot of these about at the moment with 9ct coins being passed for 22ct. The way to spot them is the difference in colour and they only way 7grams instead of 8. Deatils in a news story in source link

  3. buy only gold coins that you can lock up in your safe deposit box, don't ever trust anyone on a phone that they ar eholding your gold for you.you will loose out

  4. Try the mutual fund, PRPFX.  Go to Yahoo Finance, look up the symbol and then look to the left to see "holdings".  Click on the link and you'll see, in addition to gold, there are Swiss denominated holdings and some US treasury bonds.

Diversify for the long term and spread the risk.
