What's the best way to clean a rug?

I have a floor rug - it's about 5 ft * 3 - and I don't know how to clean it. I know I can like shake it out, but can I use carpet cleaner on it? Thanks and I apologize for the lame question. :)

If you can't afford to get it professionally clean at this time, then take a scrub brush with full britzels, and a bucket of hot soapy water with a hint of bleach( Only if its a very light color rug) and scrub. If you have a Multi color rug, then buy some Resolve carpet cleaner(the foam bottle).
