My previous couch had gotton dirty one time and I took the covers off the cushions and washed them in the washing machine and they ended up shrinking. Is there a way to clean cushion covers without them shrinking? I don't know what the fabric is but it's soft and the color changes slightly when you rub it different directions...

  1. It sounds like the material is velour.

I would take them off the cushions, soak overnight in tepid water with detergent.

    Rinse.

Soak in tepid water and fabric softener.

    Slow spin.

    Straighten out to dry.

    Regards.

  2. I loke to use dry carpet/upholstery cleaning granules, both resolve and capture make them.  They remove stains effectively without causing water rings, brighten grunge from the fabric and leave little residue after dry and being vacuumed up.  Besides, you don't have to struggle to take the covers off the cushions because you can treat them while they are on them.  I sprinkle it on, agitate with a brush where there are stains, let it dry, check it afterward to be sure all of the stains are gone, reapply if they are not and repeat agitation, let it dry again and vacuum.  This method has removed everything from wine stains, food stains, vomit to just plain grungy dirt from sitting.
