What's the best way to cross into Mexico going through Laredo, TX?

FIRST OFF- Everyone must have a passport to enter or exit the US after the 31st of this month. My parents (americans) are going to meet my aunt (not an american) to get my cousins (who are americans) right before Christmas and I don't want them getting lost and coming home late or being upset with each other becuase of directions or little delays. What exact directions do you think I can give them so that they can make it back quickly, smoothly, and safely without much drama from Immigration. We're getting the boys their documentation in order so they can get their passports.

Wish I could help but your question is too vague.  Driving directions from where to where?????

Looks like there should be no real problem with immigration since no one is immigrating, just Americans crossing the border.  As you said, until the end of this year no passport needed and drivers license or birth certificate for children should do it.  Why not research the web site for customs and immigration.

Well, FIRST OFF, passports are NOT needed for LAND travel to and from Mexico until after SUMMER 2008.  The State Dep't posted this latest announcement the first week of aOctober.  See the website below and read the top half of the page carefully for the current infol.  Of course , it is fine to use your passport as border I.D. and proof of citizenship if you have one now.  It sounds like the boys do not have passports right now...and there certainy is not time to get them before  the end of Dec.  It takes 6 to 8 weeks to get passports unless you pay the extra $60.00 to have them expedited and the EXPRESS mail fees too...then it takes 2 to 3 weeks.
