What's the best way to drill a 2 mm hole through 5mm of solid stainless steel 316L?

Since it's being mentioned. I'm looking to drill a single hole - the location needs to be highly precise. I'm not a hardware junkie, but I can access a drill press.

I'll likely pick up one of the hardened tips. Is it better to use high or low RPM on the drill? And how much force should I apply? Should i let the tip lead itself, or do I need to press pretty hard?

So far everyone's answer have been great!

  1. lots of patience, a brand new and sharp cobalt or carbide or some other hardend alloy drill bit, stainless steel is hard stuff, you might go through 2 bits and don't press to hard because you might break the bit.... and wear safety glasses! use a center punch if the location is critical. good luck

  2. You can try WD40 or get a carbide tip drill bit.

  3. The best way is to use a 2mm drill bit in a drill press.

You can easily use a regular high speed steel brill bit, but if you're drilling more than a few holes you might be better off using a black Oxide ot TiCN (Titanium Carbonitride) coated bit.

Whatever bit you use, also use some cutting oil. You can substitute regular motor oil if necessary - it''ll work much better than a light machine oil (like 3 in 1) and will work MUCH better that WD40. If you're just drilling a couple of holes, a drop or two of oil off your car dipstick works nicely.
