  1. I find small town lawyers are more dedicated to there work then the ones with huge offices and large over head payments. Stay away from the largest print ads in phone books. Phone a lawyer in the book but make sure its in the wrong category, example  you need a criminal laywer, phone a divorce laywer ask for a recommendation. all lawyers seem to know each other. Ask others that have used lawyer services.

  2. Personal recommendation.  Often, the ones with the fanciest "yellow page" ads are the worst.

  3. I suspect the best way to find a good lawyer is to research their case records and determine if the lawyer specializes in the field you need legal advice and help with. Interview a few of their clients.

  4. Referrals are best. Ask friends, family or co-workers or someone with first-hand knowledge of their history. If you call an attorney in the phone book ask them questions of their specialties and experience. Look for an attorney with experience in your field and never hire a 'jack-of-all-trades.' Never pay for an initial consultation because this is how they  sell themselves. Good luck.
