Question:

What's the best way to find out about the nightlife in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil? Websites with recommendations?

I will be living in Rio de Janeiro for the month of August and I want to fully enjoy the cultural life while I'm here. What I'm looking for are tips on where I can find recommendations for events, concerts, art openings, movie screenings, etc. I'm particularly interested in non-mainstream events, i.e. not huge (and expensive) concerts or festivals. Any websites or magazines I should pay attention to? I speak Portuguese, so that's not a problem.

  1. There's a page on BrazilMax entitled precisely "Rio de Janeiro Nightlife." In Portuguese, for music, the best source is Samba & Choro. There's a for it link on BrazilMax.

When you get into town, buy the weekly newsmagazine Veja. The local supplement, Veja Rio, is the best calendar available.

  2. Frommers is always a trusted source for activities and attractions.
