What's the best way to get from Watford to Cambridge?

My wife and two kids and I will be staying in Watford for a couple of weeks in August. We will spend a few days in Cambridge, but have no idea how best to get there. Should we rent a car and drive, or take the bus or train? How best to go, and how much will it cost?

  1. if you can afford it and feel confident about driving in England then a car is by far the best option ... when compared with the cost of train or coach for 4 people, plus the cost of getting around in Cambridge I think you will find car hire works out favourably ... not necessarily that much cheaper but the flexibility it gives you (especially with two children) is invaluable

I think I answered another question from you about where to stay in Cambridge ... as I said there, if you have a car it would enable you to stay at hotels/motels that may be out of the city centre ... for instance I just did a quick search on Travelodge for the nights you want and it came up with this

    http://www.travelodge.co.uk/search_and_b...

£50 a night for all 4 of you is pretty reasonable for the UK and the standard (of beds, cleanliness, facilities) in places like Travelodge is consistent and acceptable ... just don't have their breakfast, jump in the car and find a good "full English breakfast" cafe

having a car would also allow you to explore around the area, as well as on your journey to and from Watford ... you'd get much more out of your holiday this way
