  1. It is spelled "kayak".  There are several clubs in Alabama:

    Birmingham Canoe Club

    www.birminghamcanoeclub.org

    Coosa River Paddling Club

    Montgomery

    www.ag.auburn.edu/grassroots/crpc/

    Huntsville Canoe Club

    Huntsville

    www.huntsvillecanoeclub.org

    You can contact the closest club and they may be able to assist you.  A lot of clubs have roll sessions and other opportunities to learn.  The boating community is pretty good about welcoming potential new paddlers and you can borrow gear in a lot of cases to try out paddling.

  2. First, ask yourself where you would like to paddle?

    Ocean, Flat-water (lakes and rivers), or White Water (rivers)

    Second, look for local outfitters who offer boat rentals, lessons*, and a guide* to try it out and do it properly.

    * especially for white water

    Third, join a paddling group/club.  This should be easy.  Kayaking is best when shared.

    Fourth, at some point you are going to want to buy a boat.  Try craigslist.org for your first boat.  It will save you some cash until it becomes a fulltime addiction.

    I've included some links below to help you on your way...

    See you on the water!

  3. Probably rivers or lakes. If i knew where you lived i could help you abit more.

  4. feet first always worked well for me...and if you can't swim, carry a bar of soap with you so if you get tossed into the water, you can use the soap to wash yourself ashore...
