What's the best way to get surface rust off a bike frame?

Fine grit sandpaper. Sand the rust off, and then paint it a similar color. If it comes out ugly, put a sticker over spot you painted.

Coca Cola (Coke) takes rust off pretty well.  I use that on my bike and I don't even get that sticky cause i wash my hands after and I use a coke soaked rag and it stays on it once it starts to pull up the rust.

ive also heard that aluminum foil dipped in coke does even better. Hope this helps.

search "bike rust" on yahooanswers and you'll see its a common problem.  Most say steel wool for rust but I would try the coke for fun's sake (does work).
