My son wets the bed quite often and I wash his clothes but there is always a faint smell of urine left behind. If i wash his clothes with the rest of the family's clothes it makes our clothes smell like urine. Does anyone know of anything I can use to get rid of the smell?

  1. I have the same issue. Wash his stuff separate in hot water and add about 1/2 cup white vinegar to the rinse cycle instead of fabric softener. You can also add a little bit of Borax or washing soda in the wash cycle in addition to your regular detergent. The linens and clothes always come out smelling fresh for me when I do this. if something got missed for several days - hidden under the bed, etc -

i wash the items in the extended heavy cleaning/soak cycle with the Borax, etc. if it's really bad I put a tablespoon or two of grated fels-naptha in with it.

For bedding: Switching to non-cotton blankets will help too. Cotton tends to 'hold' odors more. The acrylic blankets also dry a lot faster which will save you money. They also hold up longer under frequent washing. We use poly-cotton sheets. He got some cotton tee-shirt fabric sheets for Christmas last year from G-ma, but they held the odor something fierce.

  2. Fire!  Give up, its a lost cause, why would you want to walk around wearing urine.  I'd toss it.

  3. Hi there,

To get an oder out of an item... you have to use a solution of something with an even stronger smell.    Soak his clothes in a tub or container of  3 quarts of water and 1/4 cup of Lysol.  Soak for about 1 hour.  Then soak in clear water over night.   Wash regularly after that.  Should have lost all evidence of the unine smell.

I might add that you should post a question in the medical section about how you can help your child.  This is really a medical condition that can be helped, even cured with specific exercises.

Thanks for reading and good luck.

  4. My wife says use vinigar. <}:-})

  5. carbona detergent

  6. Try adding white vinegar and baking soda to the wash. That should take care of it.

  7. My cat likes to pee on the laundry if left on the laundry room floor. We use Gain detergent and it takes the smell right out. Or try Arm and Hammer detergent, it has baking soda which should cut the smell. Also maybe try colour safe bleach. Good luck. P.S wash his clothes separate

  8. My son has that problem too. I put  a capful  (use the top of your laundry soap bottle) of pinesol (any scent, my favorite is the lemon) floor cleaner, instead of laundry soap. That takes the odor out and makes them smell so clean.

Facts About Dog and Cat Urine

    1. Urine is sterile when a dog or cat urinates.

    2. Urine starts as an acid and changes to an alkaline salt over time.

    3. Urine salt attracts moisture and breeds bacteria.

    4. Bacteria produce a bad odor.

    5. Urine does not dry - it can remain sticky for years.

    How We Treat Pet Odor

    •  We use a 3-step process which safely kills the germs and bacteria that cause the odor. This process is safe for pets and gives the best odor removal results.

    •  Our technicians carry moisture sensors which can locate unseen pet odor sources for best treatment results.

    •  For severe cases of urine our technicians are equipped to replace the pad under the affected areas of your carpet and treat the floor as well as the carpet if necessary.

    •  Please note that urine can leave permanent stains, discoloration, and even bleach the color out of carpets. If we can't get the stain out no one can. In such cases we can often patch the area with a piece of carpet from a remnant or from an inconspicuous area like a closet.
