What's the best way to give up a needy cat?

I was given a cat by my boyfriend as a gift 2 years ago. We lived together in his apartment, which was over 750 square feet, with a balcony included...ample enough room for a cat. I also didn't have a tight work schedule, so i was home with her most of the time to play. When I worked, he was home, so she had company around the clock. Over a year ago, things didn't work out with my boyfriend, and I move out. Because my cat was a gift, I felt obligated to take her with me.

My new apartment is 580 square feet with no balcony...small quarters for anyone other than myself. I also work over 50 hours per week, take evening classes, and travel for business for more than three days at a time. All I want to do lately is come home and sleep, but my cat won't allow for it. I also try to keep my home clean because I don't have much time to tend to it, but her fur is everywhere, she's resorted to pooping on the floor instead of her box (vet says she's healthy, just acting out), and whining for attention no matter the hour of the night. I hate to go home after a long day because she won't let me sleep.

I know some will say 'get another cat', but her mess is enough: I couldn't handle having two.

I realize that the best thing for me to do in this situation is to give her up, but no one will adopt a 2 year old black cat, spayed, and declawed cat (she was declawed prior to my boyfriend's adoption). I've put up numerous ads and I have had no responses.I imagine that her ideal mate would be an elderly person who has more time at home. I wouldn't mind giving her to a shelter, but I dont know of any good no-kill organizations in my area. I can honestly say that I don't want this cat anymore. I can't keep her. Its not a good situation for me or her. Any suggestions?

  1. check with your local petsmart...they have an adoption agency that works through them, they might take her. also, try putting her on craigs list for your area. or, do what I do when I find homeless cats...go to Walmart on a Saturday afternoon and sit with her with a sign that says...free cat to a good home.....that usually works for me. I've done that with great results, no matter how old the cat is. I truly feel that there is somewhere for every unwanted cat.

  2. You can try posting on pennysaver.com or craigslist.com you can place free ads on there for pets.

Put some pictures up, very nice lighted pictures of her, and talk about her positive traits in the ad.

Also, I don't know of any no-kill organizations in your area because I don't know where you live, so I can't really answer that one. But you should look at the yellow pages in your area or google one, see if you can find one.

And a friendly note to others, please do not get a cat if you cannot make a lifetime commitment to them.

  3. I work in cat rescue and declawed cats are highly adoptable.

Go to www.petfinder.com to find a rescue/shelter near you.

The part about her pooping worries me though.  Are you sure her box is clean enough?

  4. Have you tried craigs list?  I know of several people who have had very good luck getting animals adopted through craigslist

  5. You can always give her to a local pet store. They will probably take her.
