What's the best way to go about getting a magazine article published?

For anyone who has ever done this, what's the best way to submit for publication? I have always dreamed of writing, and have a few articles ready that I want to try to get in print, but am totally clueless as to how to make that happen.

Be familiar with the magazine you want it published in, and be able to convince the editor that it's perfect for that magazine--if not, first MAKE it perfect for that magazine.

Also doesn't hurt to be friends with the editor...
