Question:

What's the best way to handle this?

I had take out at a "bowl" joint the other night and as I was finishing my bowl, I found a metal sliver, resembling a machine shop shaving... buried in my rice. I've had hair in my food before, but nothing like this. I've since saved the rest of the food with the sliver in it, but haven't yet confronted the restaurant management about this. I also don't have my receipt, which they never hand out unless you ask for it. I already know that I'll never eat there again, but I'm wondering if I should contact the department of health and human services and just let them handle the whole bit... or see what they say when I take my food back and physically show them my evidence. Most likely they'll offer me a free meal or maybe even a refund. Anyways, since the metal shaving hadn't yet cut the inside of my mouth or else up..... is there a clean case here? This is almost worse than a "finger" in your chili, lol! Has this ever happened to anyone else?

  1. i agree   i waitressed 7 years and saw this from time to time... its just a Brillo shaving.. and unlikely it would have cut your mouth..,.  just think how bad it could have been.  finger, cockroach, fingernail, band aid...

  2. I doubt you have a case at all now, since it was "the other night", and you didn't report it as soon as you found it.

  3. Christopher is right, it was a piece of brillo. I've waitressed 20 years & this has happened probably 5 times. Show them if you want your meal comped.

Actually you should feel better that someone is hand scrubbing those pans.

  4. When a line cook begins to cook the next dish, he will scrub his wok or saute pan with a brillo pad or wire-bristled brush.  What you found is a wire bristle from that brush.  You should have let them know immediately, and yes, they probably would have comped your meal.  These things happen sometimes, and it happens everywhere.  If you feel strongly about this, contact the restaurant asap and get it sorted out.  Otherwise, let it go because it's not worth the stress.

  5. Go to McDonalds.
