I don't have a lot of height for the trim to go all the way down.

Its set now on drive mode, sitting on leaver.

  1. Personally, I like to have it as vertical as possible, so no rain, snow or other debris gets into the exhaust ports etc.. I know from experience because I did it the other way and cracked a head from water getting in during winter and the freezing.

  2. Trin it as far down as you can.  One of the best reasons for this is it takes the strain off the 3 rubber boots(exhaust, throttle and drive).

  3. Trim the motor down as far as it will go, but at the same time do not trim it down ALL the way. As a marina manager (MerCruiser dealer), I specify that the drives and outboards not be trimmed all the way down due to the fact that some boats do not want to trim in the spring (dirty/sticky solenoids to sticky/bad trim motors, etc.) whether it be up or down, although we do trim them down about 3/4 of the way. You can avoid the water accumulation issue in the lower unit by tying a couple garbage bags over the lower unit to keep the water out. By a couple garbage bags, I mean put one on it, tie it off, then put another one over it, just to be sure. We've been practicing that procedure for 29 years and it has worked out perfect...not a single cracked housing yet! Get it down to a point, make sure there is no water in it (dump some non-toxic antifreeze down through the propeller hub if you want to be sure nothing is going to freeze) and then throw a few bags over it and call it good. Good Luck!

  4. as vertical as possible so any water will drain.

  5. as vertical as possible over land and if it sits in the watter trim the engine completly below the watter line unless you live in an location that the watter freezes over a foot thick.
