  1. I would first of all recommend starting to hit the ball solid.  Any golf ball can spin with solid contact in the center of the club face.  Obviously, however, many golf balls with a low compression are going to spin for a higher handicap player along with the distance that is needed.

It sounds like you're blocking the ball.  I would recommend checking your alignment with a club lying on the ground parallel left of your target.  Make sure your feet, hips, and shoulders line up with the target.

From there you should start getting better contact.  If you really want to spin the ball and cannot fix your block, pick up a box of Titleist Pro V-1s.

  2. Backspin is the result of good contact with the right conditions present.  Something that is not consistently achieveable by a novice player.  Proper lessons from a good teaching pro will help you along.  They will also cure the swing flaw causing you to hit straight right

  3. Backspin is created by many factors...

      1. A soft covered ball capable of achieving a high spin rate.

      2. Soft greens that will react to the spinning of the ball

      3. A wedge with CLEAN grooves.

      4. The amount of grass you get between the face of the club and the ball (ie.. this is why spin is harder to get out of the rough)

      5. A properly downward, accelerated swing and strike.

These factors combined can help produce backspin, but note that numbers 2 through 5 are the most important, especially numbers 4 and 5.  Spin is great, I won't lie, but the real task is knowing how to control it.

It sounds like you have a push - that is if it starts right and goes straight with no left to right curvature.  This could be caused by many factors..

    1. Alignment

    2. hand position

    3. address position

    4. an outside in swing with an open clubface.

My opinion, go see a pro.  Viewing your swing will allow someone to know whats wrong and what you can do to fix it.

    good luck.

  4. Since this is a two part question , we will dwell on how to hit a ball to get backspin. The easiest way is to hit the lower third of the ball with a forceful downswing driving the ball up the club face which will impart backspin. This is commonly referred to " ball - turf ", hitting the ball before the club hits the turf. As for the shot going straight right, I believe that you are " shanking " the ball which  may be caused from standing too close to the ball and hitting it on the hozzle . This is where the club head and shaft come together. Place your hands a bit further away from the body at address as if to reach for the ball. That may cure that problem.
