Dexter is a 12 weeks old beagle, we have been trying to housebreak him for two weeks now. We thought we had it beat but the other day I vacuumed the carpet with an odor neutralizer and now he constantly pees in our living room! He NEVER did it until we cleaned the carpet..any suggestions as to why he's doing this, more importantly how we can make him stop?

  1. crate

  2. try training him with puppy pads, i got a beagle from the spca they told us she was house broken but she was trained to use the puppy pads..eventually we got her to go outside with no mistakes by taking the pads out and putting them down, then after awhile taking them away. it took much longer with my beagle than our lab

  3. Sounds like he is marking his territory. Are there any other animals in the house or at a neighbors house. Dogs can smell other dogs scents and want others to smell theirs. He may be telling any nearby animals, this is my house. As for how to get him out of that habit, I am not completely sure, but ask a pet store professional about this and any products that may deter him from peeing on your carpet. Try asking your vet as well. It sounds like he feels since you cleaned his scent away he has to re-mark it until he is satisfied. It may take some patience to break him of this habit. Puppies are sometimes difficult at first. They are like kids, they have good days and bad days. You may have to keep him out of that room by putting up a safety gate.

  4. 12 weeks old is still premature to expect your dog to be fully house trained. Mine was about 10 months old when he stopped going in the house. He peed more on the carpet after you cleaned it because his scent was not there anymore, so he peed there again. You can buy a spray that dogs and cats hate. It does have kind of a bad odor, but it works. Go to your local pet store and buy it.

  5. Lindsey, I like the look of a beagle. They are so cute.

  6. First and foremost, do not make the dog smell his mess, strike him or lock him ouside. This will just confuse the pup, and it might be afraid of you.

I have just got a puppy recently. The way I trained him was crate training. Here's a few tips on crate training and house training:

1.Try to teach them that their crate is a good place. Reward them when you place them in the crate. This is teaching them, that a treat comes with good crate behavior. Always keep your dog in the crate, unless you can keep a good eye on him.

    2. Another option, if you do not want to place your dog in the kennel all of the time, hook his leash to your belt loop, this way he can not go off and use the restroom somewhere, and you don't know about it.

    3.Always take him outside after;

    + rough play

    +after he eats or drinks

+after being let out of his crate

+ after he wakes up after a night

+ or if he shows signs of having to use the restroom,(below are those signs)

    *sniffing

    *staring at you

    *whining

4.Don't ever hit your dog, or rub his nose in his mess. This will just teach the dog to be afraid of you.

5.Don't feed him or give him to much water, before you plan to put him in his cage.

6.Don't expect your dog to hold it's restroom, more than the age of the dog in months, plus one. But no dog should have to hold it's bladder more than a 7-8 hours.

7.Be patient!! That is the key, to housetraining. Of course if you get too overwelmed, you can always buy a book, or ask a professional trainer!

8.Always, when he goes to the bathroom ouside, give lots of praise and treats!!

    Good Luck!
