Question:

What's the best way to keep Voles away from shrubs and plants?

We have Voles ( Field Mice) all around our foundation. They have made underground dens and tunnels all around our house. I'm sure they are feeding on roots of our plants in our shrubs. They don't seem to ruin any of our plants per say or should I say, at least not the established ones. I have killed many of them by way of setting sticky traps near where they come in in my garage. I recently found a snake in my garage. No doubt he was there waiting to feast on a Vole. These Voles are constantly opening holes and causing soil cave ins all around my foundation. I don't really want to exterminate them off the face of earth but I don't want them in my garage nor do I want them around my foundation. I have tried various different poisons to no avail. I have not tried the battery operated vibrating stakes yet. I have a dog who would love to get them but he would run a mile away from home if I let him try. No cat suggestions please. Please offer any experienced advice for keeping them away.

  1. I found that when I removed my daffodil bulbs, I had an underground critter problem.  I planted daffodils in my borders--problem solved!   I tried "planting" mothballs,

garlic bulbs and Juicy fruit gum as per some other suggestions, but that did NOT work.

    Good Luck!

  2. For small shrubs and other plants, we have been cutting hardware cloth and forming cylinders with it, which we line the planting hole with to a depth of 1 foot.

I have also buried moth balls around some plants with some success, but I don't know how great an idea that is.  There are also some products out there that you can mix into the soil.  Since I can smell a similar odor from the box, I assume that they have the same ingredient as moth balls.

I'll be checking back on this question to see what other suggestions you get, since I hate cutting hardware cloth.
