If I buy them too green then I have to wait a few days to eat them and if I get them just right, they brown and by the end of my work week they're done. Any suggestions?

  1. freeze them

  2. If you want them to ripen SLOWER then separate them from the main stem when you get them home.

You can store them in the refrigerator.  They will ripen slower but the skins will turn black.  This will not effect the inside of the banana but it does look gross.

Once they have gotten to ripe remove them from the peel and store in a plastic baggie in the freezer.  The frozen ones are good for baking and for smoothies.  When you do a smoothie with a frozen banana you don't have to add ice and you still end up with a thick smoothie.

  3. me too.  lately if I can see that I'm not getting to them quick enough, I slice them and put on a baking sheet and after they are frozen, take them off and put them into a plastic bag, there you can just grab a handful and put into a smoothie or shake or just eat out of the bag if you like a little something cold and crispy.

  4. Haven't you heard of the "green bags"? You can buy them online  reusablebags.com or greenbags.com & possibly at your grocery store. My mother in law gave them to me because we have the same "banana problem" as you. They totally work! As soon as the bananas look a little brown, put them in the bag & leave on your counter. We buy ours on Sunday & they last til the next Saturday (7 days)

  5. You really can't keep them from browning but keeping them in a cooler place may slow it down some - just not the fridge - that's tool cool and blackens them. Buy less at a time so they're where you like them. Or wait until they turn black and make banana bread.

  6. I heard somewhere that putting them in the freezer works

  7. to yellow them really fast, put the bananas in a paper bag with a tomato, but not for too long. And for the browning problem, perhaps you can get 3 bananas on sunday, yellow them, then get 3 more bananas on wednesday.

  8. I try to buy a couple green and a couple ripe, so I can eat them over time; refrigerating ripe bananas slows their spoiling even tho the skin turns brown.

I wouldn't put them in the freezer unless you peel them first! Frozen, I think they are better cut in pieces and blended as a smoothie.

  9. eat them

  10. those brown spots only indicate a ripening banana. there is a point of no return, however. learn to like a riper fruit, buy in less quantity, or eat them faster.

  11. cover it in a save and seel bag it works the best

  12. First off, the freezer will turn them brown and they will only be good for banana bread or something like that.

when you bring them home, pull them apart.  this helps to keep them fresh longer.

don't wrap them in anything because the natural gas in the fruit will cause them to turn brown.

I have not used them, but the new green bag is a good choice too.

  13. vaccum pack them and keep them in a dark place it helps hold them a little longer but dont freeze them or put them in a  frig they will turn brown real fast.

  14. Put them in the refrigerator. I have been doing this for quite a while. The skin my turn brown, but the fruit is still quite good.

The link below is an article about this that my wife wrote for ehow.
