Question:

What's the best way to make handprint pillowcases?

I want to have my nephews make pillowcases with their handprints on them for when my sister is in the hospital after giving birth to her third and would like to know if anyone has any dos and don't of this process.

I have done handprints on items before but it's always been through summer camps to where the children take the items home right away and I don't see what happens in the wash cycles afterwards.

I read online where the items should be soaked in white vinegar after the paint dries to set in the paint but would like to know if anyone else has anything tried and true.

I'd like to actually handprint them, maybe write some words on them and then set in all of the paint and writing before giving them to my sister so that when she goes home and washes the cases, it doesn't all fade away and fall apart.

Any suggestions?

  1. Folk Art Fabric Paint , it has a small tee shirt on the lid  at Michael's ;)))

  2. Any good acrylic fabric paint will work.  You might want to add some fabric medium to make it even more washable.

Be sure to have a heavy paper or poster board inside the pillowcase so the paint doesn't bleed thru.

If the kids are very young, have a helper to keep the kids from getting the paint EVERYWHERE.  Use paint pens to do the writing.  After it dries thoroughly, press it all with an iron set to medium heat.

That should make it washable and stay pretty for a long time.  Sounds like a great gift!!
