What's the best way to make money on a new blog?

Question

I've been thinking about starting a new blog, primarily with the aim of promoting it to make a few extra dollars each month. Nothing big, just something that I can do every now and then,.

So what is the best way to try to do this? I've looked into things like AdSense, and Yahoo Search Marketing so far, but a lot of people seem to have had bad experiences with them, but I think they might be a good place to start.

Can I even have both of them on the same site? Also, are there any limits as to how long you have to be around before these guys will let you put their ads in your blog or anything like that?

You need to build traffic and readership first - without traffic there is no point.  You shouldn't start a blog with the sole aim of making money unless you're really going to put in time.

Once you have some traffic, Google Adsense is by far the best place to start.  There will not be a minimum and it will be fairly maintenance free.

If you are really big then there are other networks you can tap into.

I, for one, have had a fairly good experience with AdSense and I'm pretty sure you can't have both on one site. Be careful not to violate the TOS. Some blog sites won't let you place ads, it's just their policy and there's no way around it, besides going elsewhere. Blogger on the other hand, is owned by Google. They've made it super easy to incorporate your own AdSense code right when you first get started. Traffic is most important as other's have mentioned. Depending on the topic of your blog, you may want to write a few product reviews and use affiliate marketing to increase your blog income. Good luck to you!
