I know practice, practice, etc. but I just played someone on an Internet site and was beat in less than 5 minutes and was ridiculed as I haven't played in over 2 decades, I'm 45... should I get computer software to teach me? There is a chess club in my town where I could play kids but they'd probably whip my behind real fast in a game as I'm so out of practice --- any advice anyone???

  1. Here is a site that has a one page chess strategy guide.

Not everything, but you can see if you are following the basic strategy for winning chess.

    http://www.chessville.com/instruction/Pr...

Look for the Chess Tips page under Misc.

Also the "Smart Scoresheet" may be helpful to take a look at.

  2. Chess programs can help, playing on the internet or in the chess club can help, reading a chess book can help. If your game's rusty you just have to get in there and shake the rust off, you'll probably play badly for a while so just accept that and don't get too embarrassed.

  3. know the pieces and how they move by heart.

the toughest opponent you will ever face is yourself.

so try playing yourself first have one color dominate and then switch...within the same game.

  4. keep playing

  5. barrow a book on how to play chess, and practise.

  6. practice against better players and study

    Then repeat

  7. First, as you are out of practice, I would recommend the play winning chess series by Yassar Seirwan.  He is a very strong player and one of the few grandmaster able to communicate strategies to a player below a 2000 rating.

Second, as for online pratice, do it but remember one thing, when people dont have to face you, they say things they normaly wouldn't.  As for being beat in under 5 mins, how many moves did you make.  In my time as a chess coach, most people move entirely *too* fast.  Slow down, play slower games.  Try correspondence chess, there you have time limits like 5 days.  Plenty of time to think, and though sites are usually populated with people more like youself, and unlike the typical kid who can play blitz.

Third, have fun and dont let people steal that from you.

  8. Im on the chess team in my local area...i want to help...

                  1. Master the opening-- this is the first seris of moves that you play

                    2. Try to use tactics which are puzles in which you find a

3.Work on the endgame tactics i.e. how to checkmate witha rook and king, how to checkmate with a queen and king.

  9. Play people that are better than you, get a few books and don't get too bogged down in understanding it all at fisrt as it will come to you, chess takes time. Just learn new little moves like "Discovered check" and "Pinning" Getting into checkmate is the one you need to work on as you can take all the opponents pieces yet they can still force a draw if you are not on your game. Buy a top of the line electronic chess set as these days they are pretty good at the advanced level. Find a friend that wants to learn as well and keep playing each other, you will find new moves and help eachother learn, just don't get into the habit of wanting the game to be over quickly as this will make you stagnant. Always think ahead, "what is my opponents next move"

  10. use the oldest tricks.....move the knight and kill all pawns
