  1. a toggle bolt would work if u can't find a ceiling joist....ask in the hardware store to show u one....when inserted in the ceiling it will spring into a T shape and holding in place...strong enough for a small cage....if its a heavy cage better find the joist to s***w into

  2. You didn't say how much the cage weighs but one good way to find your joists in the ceiling if the room is an outside room is to stand at a window or nearest door and look outside up under the eave. The joists most likely are running into the room perpendicular to that outside wall. Follow the joist into the room and come into the room as far as you need to place our hook. Packages for hooks and anchors have ratings on them and you will discover that it is usually not recommended to use any plastic anchors in ceilings for bearing loads. If you use the toggle bolts that open up, at least try to get it close to the wood. It will be stronger than in the middle of the sheetrock.

  3. if you don't find a beam use a large molly bolt.

  4. When we hung up my curtins, we screwed the hooks in and it holds really well.

  5. You can locate a truss/rafter with a stud finder or peck with the handle of the hammer.  If you can't locate one I would use a threaded plastic wall anchor.  They hold pretty well and s***w in and out very easily.  They also leave a very small hole if you ever take it out.

  6. You must find a ceiling joist and s***w the hook into the joist. It would be best if you could drill a pilot hole through the ceiling material  and into the joist-then the hook will s***w in easily.

I don't know how to explain to you how to find the joist. If you put your hook anywhere else besides into the joist- it will pull out and bring down some ceiling with it.
