Question:

What's the best way to remove dust from a room with floorboards?

My room is getting very dusty, under the bed and around my computer, normally I would just vacuum but this is the first place I've lived that's all floorboards. So how do I clean and/or de-dust the room? Should I still vacuum or use a feather duster or what? What will get the best results?

The reason I ask is because I couldn't sleep last night because I moved a few things around my room and while I was laying on my bed I was just breathing in dust getting a scratchy throat and coughing all night.

  1. I vacuum anything that's a surface! - even furniture.  However, a quality vacuum is imperative - get a water filter or some other quality filter or dust exits the filters, through the cracks, and back out into your room.  My last 2 houses have had a built-in vac (the motor is in the garage) and before that I used a water filter vac.

Dusting just throws fine particles up into the air; any time you dust it should be with a damp rag.  You sound like you might have allergies so you should keep your bedroom very clean, remove curtains or wash them once a week, no rugs, no stuffed animals (I think you're too old for this), and blinds should be vacuumed each time your floor is - at least once a week, and keep plants and animals out of your room.

  2. wrap an old cloth round your broom or whatever, dampen the cloth with kerosine, this will help pick up the dust and stop it being disturbed as you sweep, also save up your tea leaves and sprinkle on the floor damp, damp sawdust also does the trick. when you try and sweep the normal way the dust gets disturbed gets into the air and settles down again, thats why it irriatates your throat. pleasant dreams

  3. Swiffer or a microfiber mop.
