Can I just hold a match to a log, say about 2 ft. in diameter and get it hot enough to flame into a camp fire?

  1. Not a chance. Seriously. You need kindling; dried grass and small twigs are best.

Clear away the turf from the area you want to build your fire in. Make a circle of medium-sized logs (stones are even better) around the clear area. Build a sort of cone of smaller logs around the big one and stuff the kindling in the middle and around the bottom. Light the kindling. If your firewood is dry, it should take. Eventually it will get hot enough for the big log to take.

Remember to extinguish it COMPLETELY when you're done.

  2. A forest fire is natures way of clearing out the dead and diseased trees and under growth. Forest and grass fires (on the prairies) were quite common in the past only recently have we stopped them making the environment sick setting up the massive fires we see to day.

  3. Not one who likes to work at creating a fire, I like using several charcoal briquette's, some lighter fluid, small sticks, larger branches, and some matches.
