You need to get straight A's. Take AP classes to boost your gpa and show the colleges you are applying to that you can handle advanced classes. Take classes during the summer in community college so you can boost your gpa and also get classes out the way that you have to take in school or college.

Join clubs and volunteer with your religious center or at a local hospital, clinic or homeless center.

At my school the valedictorian spot was very competitive and you not only needed to be at the top of your class but be a well rounded person. Colleges also like well rounded people who participate in clubs, organized debate programs and sports.

To get into a good college you need to right a excellent and unique personal statement and do reallly well on you SAT's. Also establish good relationships with teachers so you can ask them for a recommendation letter before applying to a private college. If you have classes like journalism or a IT class, take them to be more involved with the school.
